Paint, Paint, Paint! Painting is br far the cheapest and easiest way to update cabinets. Get knew knobs…something in brushed nickel or chrome looks really fresh. You can paint them in a fresh white but colored cabinets can look really good, too. New knobs, though…that’s the key! Good luck!

It would not be very expensive to do the following, for example, and you will have newer and modern looking kitchen cabinets with the minimum effort:
If they are wooden, sand them of as much as possible. Paint them all over with paint that do not need undercoat (ask your supplier)
If they are laminated or other similar, clean them well and paint them with special paint for laminates, etc., Again ask your supplier.
Try to much the color paint to that of the rest of the kitchen,and if possible, go for light colors. You want an harmonious and modern kitchen. So do not use to many different colors.
Now the exciting part. On the front of each cabinet door glue on a mirror tile/s, the ones yo can buy ready to glue on by pealing of the paper back.
You can leave all like this or if you want to take the trouble, place a small wooden frame, like a molding, around each mirror. If you do so, paint this molding the same color as the cabinets, or if you want go for a similar color but darker or lighter.
To finish, change all the cabinets’ handles by perhaps some silver ones.
I bet very few of your friends would have as modern and exciting kitchen cabinets like yours.
Cheers,

Jasmine;
Can you send me a photo of your kitchen? There are many ways to achieve a rich contemporary appearence but I really have to see what you have to start with. One thing I can’t stress strongly enough is not to paint them with a brush, or use any typical house paints.

We recently purchased our 1st home and the homeowner before us had painted all of them a horrible blue and glazed them. We didn’t have a lot of money so we decided to tackle it ourselves. We took an orbit sander and gently removed all the paint (this took forever) but it was well worth it. We discovered it had the original cabinets (65yrs old) and they were in great shape. After you remove all the paint/stain it will be an open canvas for you to do whatever you wish. You can paint them, stencil them or stain them. It only cost us a $ 100 total to do all the kitchen cabinets.

It would have been easier to help you if you had either given us a link to a picture or at least described what your cabinets look like… I have LOTS of ideas for revamping cabinets… depending on what they look like already… can you please give us more details…and email me when you’ve added the details so that I can come back and give you some great ideas.
Thanks!

I agree with Ashley H. Paint and new knobs/pulls go a long way.
In my case, my cabinets are old and would probably fall apart when I remove the countertop. So, we are getting new ones from Home Depot. We picked out some that are $ 96/linear ft. Or, if you have one in your area, go to a builders warehouse and find good bargains on cabinets. There’s one in my town that sells cabinets, appliances, fixtures… You can get some good prices on good quality cabinets.

If your house was built before 1960 please take a look at this
