I am thinking of buying a Mini-DVI to VGA adapter for my recent purchase of my Macbook. Is it sold in other retail stores like Best Buy or Office Depot?

I don’t think so – and they are the same price wherever you get them. Even places like eBay usually sell them for about the same as the Apple Store. Personally, I’d just get one from the Apple Store online. They are fast and safe.

If you have a Fry’s I’m sure they have it otherwise I would check Bestbuy or Radioshack

Apple Retail Store, Apple Online Store, and Mac-only online stores, or ebay. I think you’d probably be pushed to find one in a normal shop.

If you’re trying to save a few dollars, and aren’t in a huge hurry, DealExtreme is selling what you’re looking for, for $ 4.43 shipped. They only accept Paypal payments, though.
Item SKU ID is 10104, just simply search for 10104 at their site.
Items are shipped from China via airmail, so expect to wait a week or two.
Alternately, you can search on a site with Apple-certified products, but expect to pay a premium. Remember, you’re only buying WIRES with different connector shapes on either end. There is no advanced technology in such an adapter.

Did you buy one of the new LED Macbooks?
If you did, the miniDVI adapters will NOT work with it. The new LED Macbooks use miniDisplayPort adapters. You must buy those from Apple.
