Question by shiestyelbow: Tracy McGrady – What has the hype been about?
Perhaps I get an unbalanced sampling of basketball fans living in Houston. However, almost every fan I talk to considers McGrady to be an elite player. I just don’t see it. While it’s true he led the league in scoring(?) in Orlando, what exactly has he done with significant amounts of talent in Houston?
You could put dozens of players in the situation he had in Orlando and they would average equal or more points than he did.
Since coming to Houston, he has “led” his team to a first-round defeat or a sub .500 record.
I wonder what Kobe would do if he had a dominant center next to him…Oops! We already saw what happened with that scenario.

Well Tracy IS injury prone and plus he averaged lke 26 points and 6 rebounds and assists each. Thats pretty good.. If he stays healthy this year I say they beat out maybe San Antonio possibly (PLZ) and go to the second round finally.

You can not compare Yao to Shaq. If T-Mac had Shaq doing all the work in the playoffs, he’d probably have 3 championship rings too. Yao does not even possess a fraction of the dominance that Shaq had back then. He chokes in the big games while the Diesel delivers. Shaq took 3 different teams (Orlando, Lakers, Miami) to the NBA Finals and won championships with two of the teams. There is a reason why Shaq is among the 50 Greatest NBA Players in history.

KOBE IS THE BEST PLAYER IN THE LEAGUE!!!
when T-MAC is healthy he is the second best player in the league.
Answer by Good_Ball
C’mon Yao as dominant as the primed Shaq? Gimme a break will you! In terms of physical attributes alone Shaq would dominate Yao time and time again if they were to play one on one.
Don’t get me wrong Yao is ok as a player. But to be a big brute like the Shaqster Yao should build his body bigger.
T-Mac always admits he can’t do it alone. That is what’s commendable about the guy. And please don’t compare Kobe’s career over T-Mac’s. Kobe came from a pre-built dynasty kind of team with teammates ranging from: Shaq, Eddie Jones, Nick Van Excel, Dennis Rodman, Robert Horry, Derek Fisher, Glen Rice, Devin George, Gary Payton and Karl Malone.

Since coming to Houston, T-Mac has become the official sponsor of IcyHot Back-Spasm Relievers.

I am a fan of Houston Rockets 2, I wonder why they can’t get in the 2nd round of playoffs. Just bad luck? the pain of TM’s back? or do not have a good PF?
however i hope they can change a lot in the coming 07/08 season, ‘coz the team adds Francis,M.James and a PF Scola. I can’t wait for two more months ,eager to their great matches so i downloaded the game NBA LIVE2007, though transaction i have Yao,TM,Francis, Battier, but no Scola,so i get Dwight Howard as PF. It plays good,79-3.
hahaha…

I actually agree with you. I was just saying something similar to your argument last week. He was a one-man show in Orlando. But this Houston stint hasn’t been impressive at all.

The hype has everything to do with his athletic ability. Because he certainly hasn’t earned it. He has NEVER BEEN OUT OF THE FIRST ROUND (despite saying to reports after the Magic went up 2-0 in the first round “It feels great to be in the first round” and the followed that up by losing 3 in a row), he is injury prone. And saying T-Mac is second best player in the league right now is a joke. PLayers I would rather have right now: Chris Bosh, Dwight Howard, Dirk Nowitzki, Amare Staudemire, Chris Paul, Elton Brand, Jason Kidd, Shawn Marion, Lebron James, Carmelo Anthony, Tim Duncan

Just have to admit that he used to be good. No doubt about that but nowadays I don’t think he is still part of the ‘elite team’ just simply because he gets injured more than he could play.
He will never be part of the elite team as long as he continue to suffer through those injuries continuously.
As for the Cs, Yao is different from Shaq. Shaq is more agressive than Yao. Yao is good but he isn’t really up to Shaq’s standards yet. So it is an entirely different story.
I doubt Kobe would make it to any championships if he tags along with Yao.

If you watch Rockets games you will know why he is considered elite. 13 points in like half a min Vs the best defensive Team the Spurs, in playoffs scoring 1 point in the first half and still carrying the team to a victory In the Second half,Y-ming Out half the season and Rockets won 52 games which was i think the top 5 records. I mean I could go on and on but I think if you watch the games you will know how good he is.

He is over rated.

Shaq was better in dominance and made his presence known, his blocks were great & his dunks were back breaking(back then), but Yao Ming is nothing. He’s still on the path to improvement and development, so TMac needs asomeonel like Shaq for support.
TMac is not at all hyped, he’s a great player and has a great aptitude.

McGrady is in the top three players in basketball when he is on fire. He doesn’t miss, yet there are games where all he does is miss. If you watch a lot of basketball games and not just highlights you will see he gets double teamed as much as anybody if not the most in the NBA. Overall a great player but not championship competitor. Jordan is the greatest since he made the players around him better.

tracy mc-grady he is great player and he got name in every where.
Answer by Opas
He used to be a freak of a nature.
a 6’8-6’9 guys with a killer crossover and penetrating ability.
When he’s in Orlando, he’s an elite player. He goes side-by-side with Kobe Bryant in terms of skills and popularity.
However since he refused to play again for the Magic and recurring back spasm, his athletic ability and popularity decreased.
Right now, he settles too much with a 3-point shot and a medium shot instead of driving hard or posting up, but he’s still a fan favorite on the West. He is still playing in the all star-game. Sometimes as a SF and sometimes as a G along with Kobe.
Answer by Leader of the Amish Mafia
he is a great player and actually passes the ball unlike some players (KOBE who ppl think is so great) and has a better shot and shooting percentage than him to T-Mac is a great shooter it jus sucks that he has back spasms which probably hurt a great deal but yea i would love to have him on my team than alot of the suppose elite players of today kobe, iverson, dirk, and lebron. Also kobe did have a great center the top one in the NBA since he came into the NBA till now he is still the best center SHAQ, jus kobe had to run his mouth sayin he didnt need shaq and looked what happened looked like he does. Kobe needed to shut up back then and just let Shaq lead the Lakers cuz shaq led them to 3 championship rings.

Yeah I see what you’re saying, and you make a good point.
But you have to consider a few things. First of all over the past few years he’s had a lot of problems with his back and he’s been pretty injury prone. With that being said, he’s had to take a lot into consideration about what sort of shots he’s gonna go for, or how hard he’s gonna take it to the rim.
Also, you gotta remember that Jeff Van Gundy was a defensive minded coach and never really considered offense his first option. It was always defense defense defense with him, so T-Mac was never really allowed to be himself with JVG’s game plan. But it’s still obvious to anyone who watches the Rockets play that he’s still got it. Whenever the team needs him, he steps up. Yeah I know, we lost to the Jazz, but you can’t expect 2 players, T and Yao, to carry the entire team on their shoulders.
With a new offensive minded coach and a few key player aquisitions, I see T-Mac going back to his old self this season and the Rockets getting out of the second round.
Answer by Rick S
PSHHHH…. idiot. TMac is way better than Kobe. C’mon i mean he’s taller and less athletic, he’s got a lazy eye, he’s much more fragile. Wait all of those things are negative.
Looky here Mr. Bomb Boom anybody who say’s Tmac is on the same level as kobe is retarded (and a big dog that don’t know how big it is) nobody on the planet can do what Kobe does. However Tmac is an elite player Kobe #1 Tmac # 8 or 9… Id consider that elite
